The Lion in Winter
Published in Hardcover by Random House (June, 1966)
Author: James Goldman
Average review score:

True Art
I recently completed a production of this fine play where I played Geoffrey, Duke of Aquataine. I have done a lot of play and this without a doubt is the most well written. Goldman does not waste a single word in the play.

The Modern Middle Ages
This play about the famously disfunctional family of England's Henry II is perhaps the most devestating family drama this side of "Long Day's Journey into Night".

For those who want a real epic, it can - but doesn't have to - be read as a sequel to Jean Anoilh's "Becket". Personally I found that this adds to the tragedy.

It opens during a fictional family Christmas get together that is combined with a historical meeting between Henry and France's young King Phillip. Henry's persistent humiliation of his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, through his string of mistresses has prompted her to hurt him in the only way available to her - by systematically destroying his relationships with their sons. Now Henry - although not old yet - is no longer a young man. The fact that a potentially dangerous Phillip - who has a legitimate axe to grind with Henry - is no longer a child forces them to realize that their familial intrigues have set their boys up for both internal and external disaster upon Henry's death. They make a real effort to save both their shattered marriage and their shattered children, but it may already be too late ...

The main tragedy, of course, is what Henry and Eleanor have done to their children. Richard is admirably brave but has had much of his compassion beaten out of him and replaced with brutality. Geoffrey's great sense of humor has been blasted in the bud, and his fustrated capability of love makes a weapon of an intelligence that would have been an asset to anyone who would have shown him the slightest affection in return (it's worth noting for those who don't know the family's subsequent history that given the condensed time of the play, Geoffrey would presumably have died in a fatal tournament accident soon after the action of the play - making him even more poignant). John, the youngest son of Robin Hood fame, is somewhat mishandled - his failure had much to do with Richard's prior mismanagement and lousy historical timing rather than his own faults, and the ruthless streak that doomed Geoffrey's son Arthur (who isn't in the play) as well as his general competence in many instances (he would later rescue Eleanor from a siege in a manner that would have done Richard proud) doesn't really come across - but in an otherwise excellent play Goldman can be forgiven for bowing to popular opinion in one case.

An accurate depiction of the dynamics of the Plantagenet family, "The Lion in Winter" is also a timeless study of what constitutes a healthy family.

A Lion in Winter. A Lion in my Heart.
I have to say Iam in love with this book. I know every line by heart. I saw the movie frist. Also a A+++++ movie. I don't know, something about it.It somehow just gets under your skin. Anyone who loves history. Or just just great works of writing should have this little book.

Great Calendar
I am enjoying this calendar. It lists very detailed moon phases and how to read them, color of the day, references on spells and energy, information on the Sabbats and Esbats, seasonal activities, and yummy recipes by Shadow Cat. I am very happy with it.

If it was fire proof & water resistent, it would be perfect
This datebook is practical & pleasureable. I bought this for myself, after buying two others, for friends. The store in my town where I buy all things magical & mystical sold out...twice. The symbols make sense, the articles are well written, down to earth, easily applied to your daily life, regardless of path & the illustrations are beautiful. Oh, and it's a calendar, to boot. I'd recommend this datebook to anyone. Well, almost anyone...

Maggie's American Dream: The Life and Times of a Black Family
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: James P. Comer and Charlayne Hunter-Gault
Average review score:

An 'American Dream' Realised
I did a research study on American Dream in America during the 20s-30s decade. I've read a lot of books concerning the subject; literary works, forming the main portion of my resources. These ranged from Fitzgerald's 'Great Gatzby' to Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath', from Dreiser's 'An American Tragedy' to Lewis's 'Main Street'. In addition to these quite old literary works, I collected statistical, analytical information about the particular decades, to verify what I've acquired from the novels. It was a hard study, but I managed to write a reasonably concise thesis, with the help of not the sources I listed, but with this book, 'Maggie's American Dream' instead. Why?

Almost all of the books I've read were productions of imagination. Even Dreiser, who was inspired from a real account, did not stick to facts in his book, but altered them to create a fiction. However, 'Maggie's American Dream' is a true story. It is told from James Comer's point of view, in a very poetical fashion. The second part of the book is his mother's story, which is again expressed by James. The book also contains a nice section of pictures of the Comer family, which are quite interesting after reading about the family.

James P. Comer had a very hard childhood, as it could be expected during the years of never-ending racism issues. Comer beautifully expresses how they managed to stand tall, and get their share in the competition of living. Mr. Comer is now working as a psychiatrist in New Haven, after having completed his doctoral work in Yale University. It is a dream that is realised, indeed.

This book will provide you with a lot of insights about the lives of black families, American societal norms, family relations during the 20s and 30s, which you cannot find easily in any other source this clearly and truely.

I didn't want the story to come to an end ....
What a wonderful book. Very easy to read with lots of short chapters so that even the busiest of us can get through it quickly. And of course Maggie and her family are so real that you find you can't put the book down...you just have to find out what happens to them all next.
It's a great story, and worth reading from that angle alone. But all the way through this book also gives you plenty to ponder - whether you are someone with an interest in education (and doesn't that include all parents?), someone who wishes that all people had an equal opportunity to realise their potential, or someone who really wants to know what life is like for others from different backgrounds and countries. The author also inspires us to think about how we can make a difference, in some small way, wherever and whoever we are.

Maggies American Dream
This book I have read is the best book I have ever read. It has inspired me by not being mad ever time someone gets in my face and be racis toward me. I really like this aurthor he is a very insperational writter. I would tell everbody who is going through something very hard, reconmemd this book to any and every one

Making a Good Writer Great: a Creativity Workbooks for Screenwriters
Published in Paperback by Silman-James Press (15 September, 1999)
Authors: Linda Seger and Silman-James Press
Average review score:

break through writer's block
Linda Seger offers a number of ways to re-start the creative process; if only one of them works for you, the book is worth it.

Just reading through the exercises in this book was enough to get me through a serious case of writer's block. She includes an entire chapter on tapping into your religious/spiritual side to flesh out characters and deepen plot, but don't worry: If that won't work for you, she suggests skipping ahead -- there are plenty more idea-provoking suggestions to come.

It's a resource to turn to again and again, whenever a dead end looms.

A real friend to all writers!
This book combines craft and creativity and provides writers with the knowledge necessary to write at the highest artistic level. The exercises within can be reused time and again and push a writer to think outside the box.

Not a paint-by-numbers approach, instead this author guides you into unlocking and strengthening your own, original voice.

What are you waiting for? This is a great resource!

A must read for all screenwriters!
I've found so much inspiration in Making a Good Writer Great. Seger's words have helped me break through that brick wall. She is truly a light to see by. I can call myself a screenwriter once again.

Mars Threat Assessment
Published in Paperback by AmErica House (01 October, 2001)
Author: James Arementrout
Average review score:

You don't have know Sci Fi to read this book!!
As a complete newcomer to science fiction writing, I found myself captivated by Mars Threat Assessment. James Armentrout is adept at character development, giving his characters extreme activity and indepth psychological development. The book is written in a way that even a "rookie sci fi reader" like me can not only follow the sequence of action, but be totally captivated by the development of the plot and the intricacies of the details which include researched fact and fantasy. I recommend this book to readers of all types of fiction!

ANOTHER GREAT MARS BOOK
This is a book for anyone who might wonder what life on Mars might be like in the not too distant future. It is a well plotted novel with a few surprises along the way. The reader is immediately involved in the struggle of Paul Danziger as he tries to smuggle off planet "time travel" technology developed by his employer. But there are a lot of other factions interested in this technology and Paul and his friend Julian find themselves in the middle of everything. This is a good fast paced book that will definately keep you turning the pages. I highly recommend it to anyone who has read Ben Bova's books.

Another Great Mars Book!!!
I was captivated by this book from the very start. It paints a vivid picture of what Mars might be like should we (humans) get the chance to explore and set up bases there. Anyone who has enjoyed Ben Bova's Mars books will definately like this one. Paul Danziger's desperate struggle to steal and then hide "time travel" technology from his ruthless employer captures the reader right away. There are a few surprises along the way as Paul and his friend Julian run into all kinds of trouble in their quest to get the technology off planet. The book is written well and in a style that will get you into the characters and scenes.

Milton's Marilyn: The Photographs of Milton H. Greene
Published in Hardcover by Publishers' Group West (December, 1995)
Authors: Milton H. Greene, James Kotsilibas-Davis, and James Kotsilbas-Davis
Average review score:

The best photography of Marilyn Morone
We've seen enough pictures of Marilyn Morone, but this book unveils some of the rarely-seen backstage and real life pictures of Marilyn taken by her favorite photographer Miller Grenne. In addition to her normal sexy appearence, Marilyn looked natural, stunning and relaxed in these pictures. A must buy for Marilyn fans!

BEWARE OF THE DIFFERENT SIZED EDITIONS!!
OK. This book is really magnificent. Alone the cover and the back cover are to frame. The Black Sitting is indeed breathtaking and belong on billboards.
However you want to be aware that there are different editions of this book. This one is a tiny hardcover edition, very small. I don't know why it was made. The regular one was a regular sized coffee table book, of around 10 inches height. It looks as though this may be out of print.

MILTON'S MARILYN: THE PHOTGRAPHS OF MILTON H. GREENE
As the previous reviewers commented, I found this book to be a superlative photo album of one of America's foremost photographers. Mr. Green truly captured Marilyn Monroe's candid beauty. Green brought forth Monroe's innocence as well as her sensual and goddess like images through the lens of his camera. You see her playfully swimming and frolicking in a pool. You see her riding atop an elephant in Madison Square Garden, NY to help benefit Children's Charity. The closing photos in the book of her portrayal of Elsie Marina, in the Prince and The Showgirl and "Cherie" the "Chanteuse" in her first movie production of "Bus Stop" are memorable as well. I truly recommend this magnificent work for anyone who enjoys seeing a creative master photographer and the beautiful legendary Monroe.

Modern Cabins: A Memoir of the Sixties
Published in Paperback by Mohawk Press (July, 1997)
Author: James L. Rice
Average review score:

Great reading, takes you back to the 60's.
Loved the entire book! It was like reliving the 60's with two good friends. I loved the entrepenurial spirit of the young men, and identified with their hard work, troubles and successes. Hope there is a sequel in the works so I will know what happened when they reached California.

Should be required reading about the "60"s.
Modern Cabins is an autobiographical story set against the background of the most exciting decade of our lifetime, "The l960"s" The story of two young men revitalizing a run-down tourist court and gas station. The reader sees how the events, riots, protests, assassinations and political happenings filter down to their lives making them take a stand in everyday life in their attitude towards race and political happening at their local level. You feel their successes as your own. The book reads easily and you get so caught up you don't want to put it down, I read it in one evening. James L. Rice has written a book that should be read by all social-psychology students to see another side to "The 1960s" Truly a gem-five stars--read it.

An interesting piece of American History
A great story about two young men making their way in the 60's. Mr. Rice tells their story of buying a run-down gas station and motel in Kansas City and turning it into a viable business by way of extreme cleverness and hard labor (doing much with little), in spite of many obstacles, as he also parallels the political happenings of the era. You can't help but be drawn into the story, perhaps thinking about what you were doing at the same time, or your feelings as you are drawn back into the 60's race riots, Kennedy's assassination, etc. At times the main characters show much bravery as they defy the accepted attitudes of the time by doing the right thing. An interesting piece of American History. Mr. Rice is a great storyteller.

My Life As an Indian
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1997)
Authors: James Willard Schultz and Hugh A. Dempsey
Average review score:

Buffalo culture of the Piegan Blackfeet
This is a terrific story of a young white man's time with the Piegan Blackfeet. James Willard Schultz came west for adventure and joined an Indian trading post 45 miles north of Fort Benton, Montana.

He not only traded furs, gold, liquor, and dressmakers goods to the Indians, but became fluent in the language of the Blackfeet, sharing in their hunts and wars and even taking a young Indian wife.

It's a somewhat self-conscious story from a masculine vantagepoint during a time when warrior bravado was in vogue and the buffalo were still thriving. This book portrays a segment of Native American life and culture just before the buffalo were diminished and the people were forced to reservations.

Given that _Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: an Indian History of the American West_ by Dee Brown contains only 2 or 3 pages in reference to the Blackfeet, a book such as _My Life As an Indian_ is a superb addition to one's bookshelf. Recommended.

Wonderful book!
I just came online to see if it was in print. I have had a copy of this book from the 1935 paperback that my Grandfather gave me when I was a boy. Not that I was a boy in 1935, it was actually in the early 70s. . .I was captivated by the stories JW Schultz lived! Helping his friend steal his wife from under the nose of the ever watchful father. It still grips me even today. Alas, my old copy is just that, old. That is how I came to write these words. Ordering a fresh paperback.

I cannot recommend this book more highly!

A spellbinding tale!
I absolutely loved this book, I couldn't put it down! I have been to the Blackfeet Reservation and Glacier Park many times, and while reading this book I could just imagine how it was back then. It gave me a new perspective on Indian life. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story about the old west and the Indians.

The New Complete Great Pyrenees
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (November, 1991)
Authors: Paul D. Strang and James M. Giffin
Average review score:

Very good but lacking in the training part.
Very good but lacking in the training part. The book refers to other training books but those books talk about Dogs in general not about big dogs with traits like digging, barking, roaming, etc. Other than that the book is a good buy for all interested in buying a pyr. or those who have pyrs already. I recommend it.

great
This book is wonderful! If you are thinking about sharing your life with a walking hairball... i highly recommend it. Very informative. If you can get your hands on a copy, it's well worth the money.

The Great Pyr Bible
I have owned this book for seven years, and it was what sold me on buying a Great Pyrenees. A Great Pyrenees is a wonderful breed, but not for everyone. Please read this book before buying a Great Pyrenees. I have read this book multiple times, for it is the "Great Pyrenees bible". Other Great Pyrenees books were of no value to me. Paul Strang's book has helped me better understand my big, walking "snowdrift".

The Newsboys' Lodging House: Or the Confesssions of William James, a Novel
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (10 March, 2003)
Author: Jon Boorstin
Average review score:

Will Make You Excited About Your Every Breath & Choice!
"Newsboys'" boasts a page-turning plot as well as the wonderful ability to make you think about important life questions. I read the entire novel during one ten-hour stretch of business travel ... and it made what could have been a grueling day of planes and airports a day of pure joy. The plot kept me entertained, but the philosophical elements kept me both hooked on the book and repeatedly pondering my own life and choices. "Newsboys'" may not be in the same literary league as E.L. Doctorow's "Ragtime," but it's much better than the current crop of historical novels typified by "Carter Beats the Devil" -- a lot of research in search of a purpose. I finished the book feeling enriched, invigorated and determined to do better at all things. Any work of art that leaves you feeling like that is a great and rare gift.

Surprisingly readable and entertaining
Boorstin has a unique voice and take on the period and an interesting speculation on what I understand to be a missing period in the life of William James. This book gives a vivid and entertaining picture of life in New York a hundred years ago. Recommend.

Just fascinating
Started reading this on the book counter at the local B&N and couldn't put it down. Fascinating premise and wonderfully vivid excursion into turn-of-the century New York. Stylish, well-researched and entertaining.
